Field Trip: Philadelphia!

You may have noticed that I haven't posted for a few days...the reason was a short business trip to Philly. Now, I'm sure it has it's own problems that aren't apparent on a short visit. But I fell in love.

I was planning to keep my eye out for bike lanes. It would have been easier to look for a street without them! Every street, other than local side streets, had a bicycle lane. And bicycle traffic. Even the access road to the airport had them.

My next few posts will be about my trip. First, I'd like to introduce the fabulous woman who pulled up in a business suit and pumps. She chatted with a man - neighbor? husband? sitting on the front stoop of her building. He offered her his beer, she took a sip, talked for a few more minutes, then rolled her bike inside the building. Awesome.

  1. that's a great slice-of-life shot of philly!

i was there for a conference a few years ago, right around this time of year, and i agree it is a beautiful city, with a rich history (including cycling history!). did you get to check out via bikes while you were there? they are supposedly one of the biggest vintage bike shops in the country.

  2. i was born in Philadelphia & have lived here for most of my adult life & i love it as well. it makes me so happy to hear that you had a good experience since we don't always manage to show visitors our best side. however, as much as i would love it if we did, we definitely don't have bikes lanes on every street - far from it, actually. we do have a ton of cyclists though and certainly more bikes lanes than we used to...

anyway, this photo and the story behind it are wonderful & i can't wait to read about the rest of your visit!

  3. I had a great time there - wish it could have been longer! It really felt like a real city with a bustling downtown and lots of culture. I'm sure it has its own faults, but it has a lot of the things I miss in Atlanta - history, lively streets...

I have about a week's worth of stuff to post, so keep checking back. I didn't know about via bikes, but I did stop by Trophy Bikes - I'll write about that today.
